Tasting
Notes:
2005 Vineyard Designate Chardonnay
The sandy, rocky soils and sunny, cool climate of the Arroyo Seco appellation produce a full-bodied wine accented with apple and citrus fruits as well as hints of crème brulée. The crisp acidity is balanced by well-defined mineral notes and the finish exudes flavors of baked apple and pear. (Date tasted: 08/28/06)

Profile: Bernardus Winery owner Ben Pon, a Dutchman, chose the Carmel Valley in California for his estate vineyards and winery, focusing his efforts on Bordeaux varieties. The Bernardus estate vineyards of Marinus and Featherbow Ranch are located in the Cachagua region of the Carmel Valley. Cachagua, the Spanish word used by Native Americans to mean hidden water, suits the lands current usage. Of Pon’s 220 acres, 50 acres have been planted to vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. American winemaker Dean DeKorth was educated and served as an apprentice in France. He seeks to create traditional wines that please the palate. All wines are aged in oak tanks and barrels specially crafted for Bernardus in the French region of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Oak is purchased from many coopers in France to allow for blending of different flavors.
