Tasting
Notes: Forget
savvy winespeak, this wine has the bouquet of a crème brûléeand
we love it! What could be a more inviting aroma than one of the western
world's most cherished desserts? If only the wine followed through with
such a delicate nuance of spice, it would be our top pick of the 1999
Zins. But, as is our gripe with too many present-day Zinfandels, Claudia
Springs has sacrificed elegance for ripe, jammy fruit, measuring in
at a startling 17.1% alcohol. Granted, if you can only have one glass,
let it be packed with such a rich, ripe array of cooked raspberries,
cinnamon, vanilla and pepper as the Rhodes. (Date tasted 10/26/01)
Profile:
Established in 1989 as a premium Anderson Valley Chardonnay producer,
Claudia Springs focus has since shifted toward two red varietals:
Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. A family-run operation, many of Claudia
Springs releases number less than 50 cases, which immediately sell
out to their devoted wine club. In addition to the Rhodes Zin, Claudia
Springs produces other single vineyard Zinfandels, Eagle Point and
Mendocino, all from Mendocino County's Ukiah/Redwood Valley area
fruit.
