Tasting
Notes: It’s time to talk
about that obscure Italian varietal. For this bottling,
the grapes were selected from the Gary Heitz family vineyard
in Napa Valley. This robust and rustic wine, which was aged
for three years in French oak barrels, has an even red color
and fruity flavors. It is quite gentle in the mouth and
delivers complex flavors from cocoa to spice via leather.
The finish lingers and is a bit hot. Leave it aside for
a few years and you will have a great wine for steak on
a cold winter night—that is, if you manage to get
one of the 640 bottles produced. (Date tasted: 03/11/05)
Profile:
One of the first wineries you encounter on the way
north into Napa Valley is Cosentino, founded by Mitch
Cosentino, who is also involved in two other projects,
CE2V
Estate Winery and Crystal
Valley Cellars. Together, these result in more
than 40 wines from 20 varietals. Cosentino Winery
is known for small, distinctive vineyard lots, a "micro"
approach to winemaking, and exotic brand names, such
as the Novelist Meritage White and the Poet Meritage
Red. The winery produces over thirty limited-production
wines from more than fifteen grape varietals. Along
with the winery's offices and production facilities,
the tasting room and gift shop are located at the
primary address on Hwy 89. |
