Tasting
Notes: The
overall production of Dievole wines peaks at 14,000 cases,
but quite a few bottlings are offered in much smaller increments,
such as our selection for this week: the Fourplay. The winemaking
team packed in four near-forgotten grape varietals from
Sicily: Nero d’Avola, Frappato Nero, Nerello Mascalese
and Cappicio. They come in together in a playful manner
to create a flexible wine that will take you through a variety
of different foods. The wine is alive, juicy, fragrant and
most original. We also like the price, making it easy to
pick up a few bottles for a nice evening summer party.

Profile:
The Dievole estate is composed of 1,015 acres, 237
of which comprise their 16 vineyards. The estate was
resurrected some 20 years ago, when the Tuscany vineyard
was discovered in ruins. To re-cultivate the entire
property, piece by piece, 16 sharecroppers were hired,
who (and their families before them) had previously
tended the vineyards to become Master Vintners. Much
of the last two decades have been devoted to the restoration
of the estate, including the preservation of 18 vanishing
Sangiovese clones. Dievole’s offerings include
mostly red blends of classic Italian varietals such
as Sangiovese, but the winery holds a few whites and
rosés in its cellar as well. |
