Tasting
Notes: With
its jewel-like ruby color and robust nose of raspberries and plums,
this limited-release (only 150 cases produced) promises a full package.
It delivers with a medium to full body, in which the Cabernet influence
is evident, plum and jammy flavors and dusty tannins. Its fatal flaw
is the finish, anti-climactic for such a lush wine, particularly one
with a $60 price tag. But this relative newcomer to Geyser Peak's plate
is full of potential. We look forward to seeing what they produce next
year. (Date tasted 11/5/00)
Profile:
Founded in 1880, the winery currently known as Geyser Peak has gone
through several incarnations. From Italian Industries to Schlitz
Brewery, it seems everyone in the beverage business has played a
role in the winery's evolution. Currently, Geyser Peak is owned by
Jim Beam Brands of the United States and run by Australians, including
winemaker Daryl Groom. Under Groom's guiding hand, the winery has
begun producing small lots of handcrafted wines that could easily
keep up with some of the world's finest.
