Tasting
Notes: Green-skinned plantains, coconut milk,
oaksound like the nose of a California Chardonnay? Not this time!
Hosmer's has to be the least traditional, most fascinating Cabernet
Franc we've tasted in recent memory. Tropical aromas lead to a complex
palate of sugar, spice and other things nice like toasted coconut, licorice
and dark chocolate. For a wine almost overwhelmed with flavors, the
finish falls off a little too short. Overall, we thoroughly enjoy this
wine, we just may not classify it in the Cab Franc category. Instead,
we like to call it
dessert. (Date tasted 8/17/01)
Profile:
This little, family-run operation boasts some of the best Cab Franc
in the Finger Lakes; some say they're among the finest in the country.
A member of the Cayuga Wine Trail (just outside Ithaca, NY), Hosmer
is very active in helping to promote Cayuga Lake as a leading wine
region. It is recognized throughout the area for sponsoring barrel
tastings, special dinners and more to help introduce an international
audience to their little-known, warm-climate pocket of the greater
Finger Lake area.
