Tasting
Notes: This extremely limited-production
wine from one of America's oldest and most easily recognized wineries
proves there's more to Mirassou than mass-marketed Chardonnay. It may
be difficult to get beyond the fungus-infused noseyes, the wine
is supposed to smell like decaying mushrooms. It is a stylistic choice
that can add an earthy element to the Pinot nose, but Mirassou's attempt
has resulted in an overwhelmingly fungal aroma. Beyond the bouquet,
this medium-bodied wine offers a very complete evolution of flavors
ending with intense black currant on the finish. (Date tasted 07/09/01)
Profile:
Self-proclaimed as the nation's oldest winemaking family, the Mirassous
boast a long history of "firsts." The first to grow Pinot Noir in
California, the first to try mechanical harvesting, and the first
to use cold stainlesssteel fermenting, this Monterey County
manufacturer has earned its place in American winemaking history.
Today, in addition to their widely distributed Coastal Selections,
the winery also experiments with finely crafted, small production
lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Pinot Blanc
under Showcase Selection, Harvest Reserve, and Single Vineyard labels.
