Tasting
Notes:
Good wine always begins in the vineyard and this South African Sauvignon
Blanc obviously benefits from a blend of great fruit sourced from a
variety of vineyards. But its greatest asset may also be its downfall.
Exceedingly complex, with notes of citrus, dried lemongrass and passionfruit,
clean on the finish yet lush in the mouth, it fails to commit to a singular
style. Nevertheless, this is a refreshing drink offering a glimpse of
South Africa's finest fruit. (Date tasted 10/26/01)
Profile:
Run in the negociant manner, Neil Ellis Wines sources grapes from
a variety of vineyards on the Cape's West Coast. The winery's philosophy
is built on the ideal of terroir and the blending of fruit from top
regions to produce distinct, complex styles of wine. Fruit for the
Cabernets and Merlots come from the Stellenbosch region, famed for
producing South Africa's finest reds. Most of the winery's Sauvignon
Blanc fruit is sourced from Groenekloof, a region blessed with deep,
granite soils.
