Tasting
Notes: This Great Lakes Gewürztraminer comes
on strong with scents of the tropics and exotic spice as well as a burnt
quality that catches at the back of your throat. Surprisingly subtle
despite the deceptive nose, this dry, rather delicate wine finishes
long with a faintly licorice aftertaste. Although it is lacking in the
mid-palate, this well-priced wine makes for a nice change of pace. (Date

Tasting
Notes: It can be difficult to produce bigger-bodied
reds in less hospitable climates like Michigan, but Peninsula Cellars
should be applauded for its efforts. Its 1998 blend stirs up a pleasing
array of eucalyptus, blueberry and plum aromas and flavors, but the
wine lacks the body we've come to expect from a Bordeaux varietal blend.
Instead, it inspires thoughts of Beaujolais: light, fruity and exceedingly
quaffable. (Date tasted 11/5/00)
Profile:
This Michigan upstart recently undertook the project of digging out
a naturally heated and cooled cellar for bottle storage. Although
it certainly sets the estate apart, the logistics of underground
cellaring are perhaps a bit more challenging in Northern Michigan
than the Côtes du Rhône! Nevertheless, this young endeavor is fast
earning its reputation as one of Michigan's most remarkable, and
most daring wineries.
