Tasting
Notes: If California followed the French
classification system, this wine would undoubtedly earn First Growth
status. Its flavors and aromas already come on with full force and with
a few years bottle aging, this adolescent should evolve into a complete
knockout. Fruit-forward, yet perfectly balanced, it lingers long with
a tangy finish. Enthusiasts of the French style may find the liberal
use of oak objectionable, but no one can deny the pleasures of vanilla
and cinnamon that oak accentuates. (Date tasted 07/09/01)
Profile:
As second- and third-generation Central Coast farmers, members of
the Talley family subscribe to the philosophy that great wine begins
in the vineyard. Comprising three unique vineyards in the Arroyo
Grande and Edna valleys, the winery specializes in the Burgundian
varietals, but also grows small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling,
Cabernet Franc, and Melon. In an attempt to showcase their distinctive
terroir, the Talleys have adopted Burgundian winemaking techniques
and practice policies of using native yeast as well as limiting new
oak.
