TASTING NOTES

Tarius

1999 Aldine Vineyard Zinfandel
Varietal/Style: Zinfandel
Origin: Mendocino County, CA
Vintage:
1999
Winemaker: Tim Olson
Rating: 12/20
Retail Price: $29

Tasting Notes: A sweet, cherry taffy nose is almost overwhelmed by the scent of alcohol—no surprise at 16.1%. Its flavor components are smooth and simple, with an unexpectedly fleshy mouthfeel. We enjoy the bright berry presence and lingering finish of sweet pie cherries. An easy drink, we appreciate the straightforwardness, but must raise an eyebrow at the somewhat startling asking price. (Date tasted 10/26/01)

Profile: Tarius was established in 1996 after banker Tim Olson decided to turn his passion into profession. Along with partner Scott Nelson, Tim studied winemaking in several cellars, including Zinfandel icon Rosenblum and even a French cooperage. When the time was right, the pair embarked on their own winemaking venture, named Tarius from Sagittarius, to produce premium, handcrafted wines from California fruit.
