Insieme
In Italian, Insieme translates to “together,”
an appropriate name for a wine that blends Italian and French
varietals. The wine is a combination of Barbera, Petit Verdot,
Petite Sirah and Sangiovese, all selections from winemaker
Craig Reed, known for his penchant toward Italian grapes,
and partner Alan Kinne, who incidentally was hired to help
expand the Rhône and Bordeaux collection at Martin &
Weyrich. A New World blend of Old World grapes, the Insieme
shows a fruity, robust, yet balanced character. It will pair
well with meat-based pastas or hard cheeses, and for $18,
it’s not a bad value either. (Tasted: 1/23/06)

Pinot Grigio
A perfumed nose of bananas, citrus, cantaloupe and pears give
way a soft, straightforward style of wine. Silky in the mouth
with a hint of effervescence up front, its viscosity is one
of this Pinot Grigio's finest features. The epitome of summertime,
Martin and Weyrich's wine cries out for a sundeck and a plate
of cold antipasti. (Tasted: 7/9/01)
Profile:
Formerly Martin Brothers Winery, this wine company has
earned its reputation as one of the leading wineries
in the U.S. specializing in Italian varietals. Establishing
itself as an innovator, the winery is recognized as
the first to plant Nebbiolo in the U.S. It is also known
as the first and only winery in the country to ferment
and age Chardonnay in chestnut barrels as well as the
first to experiment with styles such as an American
Super Tuscan and traditional Vin Santo. |
